An die Laute, Op. 81, No. 2, D 905

To the Lute

This lovely song An die Laute, Op. 81, No. 2, D 905 was composed in 1827 by Franz Schubert.

It is the second of three songs in Schubert's Drei Lieder, Op. 81, first published in 1827.

The lyrics are by Johann Friedrich Rochlitz (1769-1842).

Rochlitz was a German playwright, musicologist and art and music critic.

Schubert's lied An die laute is a charming and tuneful song in which a suitor serenades his beloved mistress.

He softly plucks his lute from the street up to her window, where a faint light is still gleaming.

The singer is hoping that only his beloved will hear his music, but the neighbors, not the neighbors!

The arpeggiated chords in Schubert's piano accompaniment imitate the soft strumming of a lute.

This song An die Laute is intended for high voice with piano accompaniment.

It is appropriate for Grade 3 singers.

The vocal range is D4-F#5.

Duration : 01:44
