This lively Waltz, Op. 39, No. 9 is the ninth of 24 pieces in Tchaikovsky's Album for the Young.It was first published by Jurgenson in 1878 as No. 8.
Tchaikovsky's Waltz is written in the key of E flat Major.
It is appropriate for Grade 6 piano students.
This Waltz Op. 39, No. 9 by Tchaikovsky features an A-B-C-A-B musical form :
- Section A (measures 1 to 18) : two similar 9-bar phrases, the first one ending on the tonic and the second one modulating to G minor
- Section B (measures 19 to 34) : a contrasting section, back in E flat Major, featuring slightly higher notes, delicate staccato notes and an elegant character
- Section C (measures 35 to 53) : another contrasting section, this time heavier and restless, with accents over ostinati fifths in the left hand
- Section A (measures 54 to 68) : identical to the beginning
- Section B (measures 69 to 85) : identical to measures 19 to 34, except the very end
Please note also that on the first beat of measure 50, in the left hand, some editors give C3-Ab3.
However, Tchaikovsky's autograph of this piece clearly shows C3-G3.
