Offenbach, Jacques (1819-1880)

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) was a German-born French composer and cellist of the Romantic period.

Jacques Offenbach was one of the originators of the operetta form.

He was, with Johann Strauss, one of the most influential composers of popular music in Europe in the 19th century.

It was through the success of Offenbach's works abroad that operetta became an established international musical genre and evolved into the 20th-century musical.
