The opera fantastique Les Contes d'Hoffmann [The Tales of Hoffmann] was composed in 1880 by Jacques Offenbach.
It is based on a French libretto by Jules Barbier, based on the short stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann, who is himself the main protagonist of the opera.
Offenbach's opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann was first performed in Paris, at the Opéra-Comique, on February 10, 1881.
