Waltz, Op. 39, No. 9

Valse - Album for the Young

This lively Waltz, Op. 39, No. 9 is the ninth of 24 pieces in Tchaikovsky's Album for the Young.

It was first published by Jurgenson in 1878 as No. 8.

Tchaikovsky's Waltz is written in the key of E flat Major.

It is appropriate for Grade 6 piano students.

This Waltz Op. 39, No. 9 by Tchaikovsky features an A-B-C-A-B musical form :
  1. Section A (measures 1 to 18) : two similar 9-bar phrases, the first one ending on the tonic and the second one modulating to G minor

  2. Section B (measures 19 to 34) : a contrasting section, back in E flat Major, featuring slightly higher notes, delicate staccato notes and an elegant character

  3. Section C (measures 35 to 53) : another contrasting section, this time heavier and restless, with accents over ostinati fifths in the left hand

  4. Section A (measures 54 to 68) : identical to the beginning

  5. Section B (measures 69 to 85) : identical to measures 19 to 34, except the very end
Please note that in this score, the slurs and dynamics are faithful to Tchaikovsky's autograph manuscript.

Please note also that on the first beat of measure 50, in the left hand, some editors give C3-Ab3.

However, Tchaikovsky's autograph of this piece clearly shows C3-G3.

Duration : 01:19
