It Came Upon the Midnight Clear
From the Five Sacred Part Songs (1871)Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan adapted the melody of the first four lines of this Christmas carol from an old tune, and composed the melody of the remaining four lines.
The lyrics were written in 1849 by Edward Hamilton Sears (1810-1876).
This carol was first published in Church Hymns with Tunes in 1874.
