Sonata in A Major, K 322, L 483
Allegro
During the course of his life, Domenico Scarlatti composed some 550 harpsichord sonatas for his royal pupil and patroness, Queen Maria Barbara of Spain. This Sonata in A Major, K 322, L 483 is appropriate for Grade 7 piano or harpsichord students.
It has one single movement : Allegro.
Its musical structure is A (repeated) - B (repeated).
Please note that this score contains suggestions for performing the ornaments (here, trills and appoggiaturas) in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.
Specifically, trills begin on the upper auxiliary note, ON the beat, and must have at least four notes.
In this sonata, there are two types of appoggiaturas :
- Short appoggiaturas (measures 24 and 62) : the short appoggiatura is to be played very rapidly, on the beat, so that the main note retains almost all of its value
- Long appoggiaturas (measures 3, 5, 42, 74, 75 and 79) : the long appoggiatura is played on the beat and takes up one half of the main note's value
Please note also that we suggest adding cadential trills to measures 43 and 80.
Such trills at final cadences, whether indicated by the composer or not, are an important characteristic of the Baroque style.
