This Study Op. 86, No. 5 by Richard Hofmann is excellent for developing détaché bowing as well as for practicing various other bowing patterns.This study is a must for every viola student! It is to be practiced with a great variety of bowing patterns, in all parts of the bow.
The violist should try to keep the fingers close to the fingerboard as he plays this study.
In particular, the fourth finger should remain above the strings at all times.
Furthermore, it is good idea to use the fourth finger instead of the open strings as often as possible, in order to develop a good position of the left hand.
This study can be played entirely in the first position.
