Sarabande in D minor

Saraband - Sarabanda

This Sarabande in D minor by George Frideric Handel was composed during the Baroque period.

It has a simple A-A-B-B musical form :
  • Measures 1-8 : Phrase A (played twice) starts the main key of D minor and modulates to the relative key of F Major in measure 6
  • Measures 9-24 : Phrase B (played twice) begins in F Major, modulates to A minor (measure 14), then to G minor (measure 17), F Major (measure 19) and finally back to the main key of D minor in measure 22
This Sarabande in D minor can very well be played either on the piano or harpsichord.

In accordance with Baroque performance practice, remember that unslurred quarter notes should be played slightly detached, especially in the left hand accompaniment.

Please note that for your convenience, the editor has included in this score suggestions for adding trills in many places within this Sarabande

In particular, trills begin ON the beat, on the upper auxiliary note. More on less repercussions may be played depending on the player's ability.
