This short piece La Charoloise by François Couperin is a work from the French Baroque period.It has the following A-A-B-B musical form :
- Measures 1-6 : Phrase A in the main key of D minor
- Measures 7-14 : Phrase B starting in G Major, then modulating back to D minor in measure 10
In order to assist the player, the editor has added to this score suggestions for the realization of the ornaments in accordance with French Baroque performance practice.
These ornaments are :
- Mordents (in the left hand, measures 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 14) : mordents begin on the main note, ON the beat, and should be played as rapidly as possible with a biting character
- Trills (measures 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 13) : trills begin on the upper auxiliary note and are played ON the beat
