Away in a Manger
Mueller - Sacred Song - Christmas Carol
This beautiful and famous Christmas carol Away in a Manger is set to the tune Mueller by James Ramsey Murray.
It was first published in 1887 in Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses (New York : J. Church Co., 1887).
At that time, Murray gave it the subtitle Luther's Cradle Hymn, refering to the German reformer Rev. Martin Luther (1483-1546).
However, it is now generally accepted that Luther did not compose this song, but that Murray himself did.
The authors of the lyrics remain unknown.
The first two verses of the lyrics were first published in 1884.
The third verse was first printed in Gabriel's Vineyard Songs in 1892.
The meter is 18.104.22.168.
This score is an arrangement for four-part choir (soprano, alto, tenor and bass).
It is set in the key of F Major.
