Carroll composed this work in 1933, and it was first published in London also in 1933.
For this piece Shadows, Carroll quotes two lines from a poem by the English poet Lionel Pigot Johnson (1867-1902) :
Only the night air, and the dream;
Only the far, sweet-smelling wave.
This piano piece is appropriate for Grade 3 piano students.
