Mélodie-Élégie

Mélodie Op. 10, No. 5 - Invocation - Melody - Elegy - Les Érinnyes

This Mélodie-Élégie by Jules Massenet was composed around 1866 as No. 5 of the 10 Pièces de genre, Op. 10 for the piano.

In 1872, Massenet used this Mélodie in his incidental music for Les Érinnyes : tragédie antique by Leconte de Lisle (1818-1894).

In Les Érinnyes, this melody is entitled Invocation.

It is played by a solo cello with orchestral accompaniment.

It is an elegy to accompany Electra's lament at the grave of her father.

In 1885, Massenet published an arrangement of this Élégie-Mélodie for violoncello with piano accompaniment.

This score is a new edition of this arrangement.

The cello part is appropriate for Grade 6 cello students.
