Sonatina op. 41, no. 1 (1/2 : Arietta) - Violin

Sonatine - First movement : Arietta (Andante cantabile)

Johann Baptist Vanhal's Arietta was originally composed for the piano in the key of C Major.

It is the first of two movements in Vanhal's Sonatina op. 41, no. 1.

This score is an arrangement of Vanhal's Arietta for easy violin and piano.

The violin part is to be played in the first and third positions. It is appropriate for Grade 3 violin students.

This sonatina movement is an excellent piece for young violin students to practice the third position.

It is also a good occasion for the young violinist to get acquainted with the simpler form of the pre-classical sonatina.

Vanhal's Arietta features an A-A'-B-A' musical form in which the main melody alternates between the violin and the piano :

  • Phrase A : measures 1-4
  • Phrase A' : measures 5-8
  • Phrase A (repeated slightly varied and ornamented) : measures 9-12
  • Phrase A' (varied) : measures 13-16
  • Phrase B : measures 17-20
  • Phrase A' : measures 21-24
  • Phrase B (varied) : measures 25-28
  • Phrase A' (varied) : measures 29-32

Duration : 01:01
