This sheet music is the instrumental version of Gounod's Ave Maria.Our edition is based on Gounod's original 1853 instrumental version.
Gounod entitled this instrumental version Méditation sur le 1er Prélude de piano de J.S. Bach [Meditation on the first Piano Prelude by J.S. Bach].
It is only in 1859 that Gounod adapted this Méditation to become his famous Ave Maria.
Gounod's original instrumental version was set for violin and piano in the key of C Major.
This score is intended for descant (soprano) recorder and piano.
It is set in the key of G Major.
The descant recorder part is intended for intermediate-level recorder players.
Please note that in Gounod's original edition, the diminuendo and piano in measures 28 and 29 are replaced by a sempre crescendo upon playing the piece for the second time.
