The Old Grey Goose - Le Rêve - Rousseau's Dream
The famous American traidtional song Go Tell Aunt Rhody originated as a gavotte in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's opera Le Devin du village.This opera was first performed in Fontainebleau in 1752.
An English version of the opera was produced in London in 1766.
The melody of the gavotte was later combined to various English texts, including Sweet Melissa (ca 1788).
It also inspired a set of variations by London pianist and composer Johann Baptist Cramer, entitled Rousseau's Dream (1812).
Around 1825, the tune began appearing in American hymnals and traditional song anthologies.
It is nowadays commonly found in children's song collections.
