Siciliano BWV 1031

Sonata BWV 1031 (2/3) - Sicilienne - Siciliana

This famous Siciliano was originally composed for flute and harpsichord.

It is the second movement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonata No. 2 in E flat Major for Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 1031.

This three-movement flute sonata was composed between the years 1730 and 1734.

This score is a transcription for viola and piano or harpsichord.

It is set in the key of C minor (the original key was G minor).

The viola part is appropriate for Grade 5 viola players.

It is to be played in the first and third positions.

Please note that in this score, all phrasing and bowing indications are editorial and should thus be regarded as mere suggestions to the players.

In measures 19 (second beat) to 21 (first beat), the notes in the right hand of the keyboard part have been added by our editor and do not appear in the source.

Also, in measure 32, we have added the appoggiatura in the right hand of the keyboard part.

The viola part contains suggestions for performing the ornaments (here, appoggiaturas and trills) in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.

In measure 4, we suggest adding a trill after the appoggiatura in the viola part.

Finally, we added cadential trills in measures 30 and 32 in both the viola part and the keyboard part.

Duration : 02:07
