Suite in G Major, RCT 6 (9/9 : L'Égyptienne)

L'Egiptienne - Suite RCT 6 - Nouvelles Suites de pièces de clavecin

Jean-Philippe Rameau's Nouvelles Suites de pièces pour le clavecin were first published around 1727.

They consist of two suites of harpsichord pieces.

This famous piece L'Égyptienne is the last of nine movements in the Suite in G Major, RCT 6.

It is appropriate for Grade 9 piano students.

Please note that this score contains suggestions for performing the ornaments in accordance with the performance practice of the French Baroque period.

Rameau uses elaborate ornamentation in L'Égyptienne :

  • pincé (mordent)
  • cadence (trill)
  • pincé et port de voix (lower appoggiatura followed by mordent)
  • double cadence (trill with termination)

For this purpose, we have used Rameau's own Table des agréments, taken from his Pièces de clavecin, first published in 1724.

Please note also the following points about this Urtext edition :

  • In measure 32, right hand, the second beat in clearly A4-C5 in the first edition of 1727 (our source). Many modern editions do not show the A4
  • In measures 36-37, some modern editions show a first and a second ending. However, the first edition of 1727 has a repeat bar at measure 36, but no first or second endings

Duration : 02:58
