Hornpipe in B flat Major, Z. T683 -- Urtext

Incidental Music for Abdelazer, or The Moor's Revenge, Z. 570

This hornpipe is the eighth movement of Purcell's incidental music for Abdelazer, or The Moor's Revenge, Z. 570 (1695), a tragedy by Aphra Behn (1677).

It was originally composed for strings.

This version for keyboard of the hornpipe is Purcell's own transcription (hence the letter T in its catalog number Z. T683).

The hornpipe is a rather lively dance whose name probably derives from the single-reed instrument that was originally used to accompany it.

Please take note that the editor has included in this score performance suggestions for the ornaments in accordance with the performance practice of the English Baroque period.

Also, we suggest adding further ornaments on repeats even if they do not appear in the score (you can hear such ornaments in our sheet music video for this hornpipe).

Adding such ornaments was a common performance practice in Henry Purcell's time.

Duration : 01:08
