Sinfonia No. 1 in C Major, BWV 787 -- Urtext

Three-Part Invention No. 1 - Sinfonia

This Sinfonia No. 1 in C Major, BWV 772 is the first of 15 three-part inventions composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.

It was composed around 1720 and revised in 1723.

Please note that this score contains suggestions for playing the ornaments (here : trills) in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.

In particular, trills are played ON the beat, starting on the upper auxiliary note.

The number of repercussions can be increased, depending on the players's taste and ability.

Furthermore, we have added in this score (in smaller print) trills that do not appear in the main source :
  • In measure 5 : this trill appears only in the Clavierbüchlein, and does not appear in the Autograph of 1723
  • In measure 9 : this trill does not appear in any of the sources, but corresponds to the trill in measure 5
  • In measure 10 : this trill corresponds to the trill in measure 6
  • In measure 14 : this trill corresponds to similar trills in measures 7 and 15
  • In measure 19 : this trill corresponds to the trill in measure 5
This Sinfonia No. 1 in C Major, BWV 787 is appropriate for Grade 9 piano students.
