Polonaise in F Major, BWV Anhang 117a -- Urtext

From the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

This Polonaise in F Major, BWV Anhang 117 was composed during the Baroque period.

Although this polonaise is attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, musicologists are not certain as to the composer's true identity.

This polonaise has a simple A-A-B-B musical form.

Two versions of this polonaise appear in Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook : BWV Anhang 117a and BWV Anhang 117b.

They differ mainly by the ornaments used in each one.

Please compare this Polonaise BWV Anhang 117a to its sister version Polonaise BWV Anhang 117b.

The following points are important concerning the Baroque period performance practice appropriate for this Polonaise :
  • Most quarter notes in the left hand should be played slightly detached
  • Mordents (such as in measure 1, first beat) begin on the main note and are played very rapidly, ON the beat
  • Appogiaturas (such as in measure1, second beat) are played ON the beat and take up one half of the main note's value
  • Trills (such as in measure 13, second beat) begin on the upper auxiliary note and are played ON the beat
  •  For your convenience, the editor has included in this score a suggestion for the proper realization of each one of these ornaments in smaller print

Duration : 01:04
