Détaché bowing is a fundamental bowing stroke in which there is one bow per note, with equal weight on all notes, and it is usually played in the middle or upper half of the bow.
Détaché is played on the string with an uninterrupted, seamless continuation of tone.
Détaché consists mainly in a forearm motion with some wrist action, while the elbow remains quiet. Also, the right thumb must be slightly bent.
The bow hair must be flat on the string, and care must be taken to play the up-bow with as much sound as the down-bow.
Détaché comes in a great variety of bow lengths :
- Small concentrated strokes
- Medium strokes
- Broad strokes, also called grand détaché
