Charles Dancla's Study in C Major, Op. 84, No. 22 is based upon the aria Une Fièvre brûlante [A burning Fever] from the opéra comique Richard Coeur-de-lion by André Ernest Modeste Grétry.It is to be played in the first and third positions and is concerned mainly with shifting and martelé.
It also includes fourth finger extensions.
It has the following musical form :
- Mm. 1-8 : Phrase A in C Major, going from the tonic to the dominant (I-V progression)
- Mm. 9-16 : Phrase A repeated
- Mm. 17-33 : Phrase B
- Mm. 34-41 : Phrase A returns
- Mm. 42-49 : Phrase A' similar to A, but this time ending on the tonic (I-I progression)
- Mm. 50-end : contrasing ending section to be played in martelé at the tip of the bow
The fingerings of this study are intended to produce frequent shifting between the first and third positions.
