Sonatine - Second movement : Allegretto

With its simple form and tuneful melody, this Sonatina in C Major, op. 41, no. 1 by Johann Baptist Vanhal is a favorite among teachers and students alike.

It consists of a short cadenza followed by two movements :

• Cadenza : a short passage in improvisatory style used mainly to introduce the key, it is normally omitted from performance
• Arietta (Andante cantabile)
• Allegretto

This Allegretto features an A-A'-B-A'-Coda musical form, which is typical of the Pre-Classical era :

• Phrase A : measures 1-4
• Phrase A' : measures 5-8
• Phrase B : measures 9-12
• Phrase A' : measures 13-16
• Coda : measures 17-24
