This Canon by English composer Philip Hayes is an excellent piece for beginners on the viola.It is an arrangement from a Catch for 6 voices in D Major entitled Ubi sunt gaudia [Where are those joys] in Hayes' work The Muses Delight: Catches, Glees, Canzonets and Canons, published in London in 1786.
The viola part can be played entirely in the first position.
