Sonata in D Major, Hob. XVI:4 (2/2 : Menuet & Trio) -- Urtext
Divertimento - Sonatina Landon 9 in D Major
This Menuet & Trio is the second and last movement from the Sonata Hoboken XVI:4 in D Major by Franz Joseph Haydn. Please note that this score contains suggestions for playing the ornaments (here : trills and appoggiaturas) in accordance with the performance practice of the Classical period.
In particular, the keyboard player must remember that all ornaments begin ON the beat, and that trills begin on the upper auxiliary note.
In trills, more or less repercussions may be played depending on the player's taste and ability.
The appoggiatura in measure 8 is subject to the following rule by Joachim Quantz :
When a rest follows a note, the appoggiatura receives the value of the note, and the note receives the value of the rest.
Moreoever, in measure 6 (and similar measures), we suggest adding a prepared trill, in which the appoggiatura serves as the first note of the trill.
Also, in measure 19, right hand, third beat, some editions show a G5 rather than A5.
Haydn's Menuet & Trio, Hob. XVI:4 is appropriate for Grade 6 pianists.
