II : Minuet
During the course of his life, Domenico Scarlatti composed some 550 harpsichord sonatas for his royal pupil and patroness, Queen Maria Barbara of Spain.This Minuet is the second movement of Scarlatti's Sonata in A Major, K 83, LS 31.
This sonata has two movements :
- Presto
- Minuet
Please note that this score contains suggestions for performing the ornaments (here, cadential trills in measures 17 and 35) in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.
In this Minuet, Scarlatti himself did not specify any ornaments.
However, it was customary during the Baroque period to add cadential trills at final cadences, whether indicated by the composer or not.
According to Baroque performance practice, trills begin on the upper auxiliary note, ON the beat, and must have at least four notes.
