Sonata in C minor, K 73, L 217 (2/3)
Minuetto K 73b
During the course of his life, Domenico Scarlatti composed some 550 harpsichord sonatas for his royal pupil and patroness, Queen Maria Barbara of Spain. This Minuetto is the second movement of Scarlatti's Sonata in C minor, K 73, L 217.
This sonata has three movements :
- Allegro
- Minuetto
- Minuetto
Please note that this score contains suggestions for performing the ornaments in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.
In this Minuetto, the only ornaments indicated by Scarlatti are trills (measures 10 and 19).
According to Baroque performance practice, trills begin on the upper auxiliary note, ON the beat, and must have at least four notes.
As can be heard in the companion video, we recommend adding a beat to measures 12 and 28.
The beat is an ornament similar to the mordent, except that it begins on the lower auxiliary note.
It is typically used at cadences on the final melody note, when that note is approached from the note below.
Also, please note that the p dynamic in measure 15 is authentic
Indeed, it is one of the very few dynamic indications in the original manuscripts.
