Invention 1, BWV 772 -- Urtext

Two-Part Invention No. 1 in C Major - Inventio 1

This Two-part invention no. 1 in C Major, BWV 772 is the first of 15 two-part inventions composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.

It was composed around 1720 and revised in 1723.

This 22-measure invention has the following musical form :

  • Mm. 1-6 : Theme exposed by the right hand (in C Major)
  • Mm. 7-8 : Theme answered by the left hand (in the dominant key, G Major)
  • Mm. 9-22 : Theme re-exposed but in inverted form, and developed into a counterpoint between the two voices until the final cadence

Please note that this score contains suggestions for playing the ornaments (in this case, trills and mordents) in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period.

In particular, trills are played ON the beat, starting on the upper auxiliary note.

The number of repercussions can be increased, depending on the player's taste and ability.

The mordents (see measures 5 and 13) should also be played ON the beat, very quickly, with an incisive quality.
