Menuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114 -- Urtext

Minuet from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

This famous Menuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114 is the fourth entry in Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook.

Johann Sebastian Bach gave this notebook to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725.

Over the years, the notebook was filled with favorite selections of the members of the Bach family.

This Menuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114 was composed during the Baroque period.

Although it has traditionnally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, recent research has shown that is was rather composer by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

This minuet has a simple A-A-B-B musical form.

During the Baroque period, musicians customarily played menuets in pairs : a first menuet, followed immediately by a second menuet, and then the first menuet played again without repeats.

This menuet can thus be followed immediately by Menuet in G minor, BWV Anhang 115 (also by Petzold), after which it may be played again without repeats.

This score is an Urtext based on the original manuscripts available.

Please note that the quarter note rests in measures 25-26 are editorial, as they do not appear in the sources.

This score contains suggestions for realizing the ornaments in accordance with Baroque performance practice.

These ornaments are :
  • Mordents : measures 3, 5, 11 and 13
  • Appoggiaturas : measure 8
  • Trills : measure 30

Duration : 01:47
