Bach - Meditation$$$$$$In 1852, Gounod improvised a melody over \u003ca href=\"\/Bach-Johann-Sebastian.aspx\"\u003eBach\u003c\/a\u003e's \u003ca href=\"\/Bach\/Prelude-1-BWV-846.aspx\"\u003ePrelude in C\u003c\/a\u003e from the \u003ca href=\"\/Work.aspx?id=19\"\u003eWell-Tempered Clavier\u003c\/a\u003e (written in 1722) which his future father-in-law, pianist Pierre-Joseph Zimmerman, wrote down and arranged for violin and small choir, a fifth above.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  That same year, Gounod set his melody to the text \u003cem\u003eVers sur un album\u003c\/em\u003e by \u003cstrong\u003eAlphonse de Lamartine\u003c\/strong\u003e and had it published by L. Mayaud et Cie.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  In 1853, a \u003cstrong\u003efirst instrumental version\u003c\/strong\u003e was published for violin (or cello) and piano under the title \u003cem\u003eMéditation sur le 1er Prélude de piano de S. Bach\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  In 1859, the melody was set to the \u003cstrong\u003eAve Maria prayer in Latin\u003c\/strong\u003e and was published in Paris by Heugel under the title \u003cem\u003eMélodie religieuse adaptée au 1er prélude de J.S. Bach\u003c\/em\u003e. It was first performed in Paris on May 24, 1859 by the famous Mme Caroline Miolan-Carvalho, who also created the soprano roles in Gounod's operas \u003cem\u003eFaust\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eRoméo et Juliette\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  Please note that there are slight \u003cstrong\u003edifferences between the vocal and instrumental versions :\u003c\/strong\u003e  \u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003etitles\u003c\/strong\u003e are different : the vocal version is entitled \u003cem\u003eMélodie religieuse adaptée au 1er prélude de J.S.
